Home > Case Studies > LiDAR Survey & Overhead Transmission Line Modeling Project LiDAR Survey & Overhead Transmission Line Modeling ProjectBackground:A prominent northern utility required accurate Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) surveys of their 138 kV and 230 kV transmission line system, 381 miles total, to enhance their reconductoring program with the ability to provide a base for analysis techniques that were not possible with the existing line data. The Problems:Many of the transmission circuits were located in densely populated areas, creating restrictions due to FAA requirements. CG Power Solutions had previous experience with LiDAR services where these services reduced the time and cost of this type of surveys dramatically. However, there was an unexpected delay in flight schedules of the survey helicopter; it was not allowed to fly while President Obama was in NY City. Moreover, survey had to be done under severe weather conditions but CG Power Solutions’s program management and scheduling skills helped to continue the project without any major delays. The Solution:Through the use of the aerial LiDAR surveys, CG Power Solutions provided accurate PLS-CADD model analyses, thermal ratings of the lines including thermal rating reports, and vegetation management analyses. In addition, CG Power Solutions acquired in-flight high resolution digital oblique photographs for each structure along the specified routes which tied into the structure locations from the PLS-CADD models. Despite difficult weather conditions and several days of delay in flights, the project was completed by CG Power Solutions on schedule and under budget. |
