Background:

An investor owned utility in the Northeastern US was facing reliability and potential environmental issues with the old SF6 circuit breakers installed at one of their key 345 kV switching hubs. The customer needed enhanced reliability and certification that the SF6 was reclaimed from the old circuit breakers.

The Problems:

The location of the switching station on the grid was of such a critical nature that potential outage windows were very limited. Proper integration of the new equipment into the existing protection and control schemes was absolutely critical. Incorrect tripping of some of the protection systems involved would remove hundreds of thousands of customers from service.

The Solution:

MSE was selected to engineer, procure, construct, and commission the switching station upgrade. MSE utilized its extensive engineering and field installation and testing experience to assure that the project was completed without any unscheduled interruptions. MSE was able to reclaim the SF6 from the old circuit breakers and sell it for the customer on the secondary market. The project was successfully delivered by MSE on schedule and within budget.
