Wind power projects will drive engineering firm's 2005 revenue

January 28, 2005
by Christine Margiotta
The Business Review

MSE Power Systems Inc. expects about two-thirds of its business--roughly $21 million--to come from the wind power industry this year.

Not bad, MSE's owners say, given that the small Albany-based, power-engineering firm didn't work on any wind projects in 2004. Federal wind-energy tax credits, which make wind turbine construction affordable, expired. Without the tax credit, the industry was virtually dead.

But interest in wind energy is growing and the technology is improving. The credits have been renewed until Dec. 31, and as more states like New York adopt renewable energy standards, federal tax credits for wind power projects could run for longer periods to meet growing demand. All of this has sparked expectations that 2005 will be a robust year for wind projects.

MSE Power Systems appears on Alexander Haig's World Business Review TV Series

General Alexander Haig, Mark Scher, President of MSE Power Systems on the set of World Business Review.

Multi-Media Productions (USA), Inc. announces the appearance of MSE Power Systems on World Business Review Television series hosted by Alexander Haig. To view streaming video of MSE Power Systems' appearance, please click, MSE Power Systems 300k/s Streaming Video or 56k/s Streaming Video.

Mark Scher, President of MSE Power Systems discusses Electrical Transmission and Distribution Challenges.

The primary issue that MSE addresses as a company, and in the discussion, is the expansion and modernization of the electrical transmission and distribution (T&D) system. MSE feels that the existing system is in poor condition and has serious capacity constraints. It addresses this by providing engineering, construction, integrated equipment packages, and field technical services to the unregulated generation, renewable energy, and regulated utility industries.

MSE also feels, and discusses its point that an integrated system approach is vital to the long-term stability of the US electrical infrastructure.

"The key to successfully integrating a power generation facility or large power consumer to the bulk power system is a multi-faceted integrated approach to the engineering design of the entire system. This approach must be based on the lowest cost of ownership over the desired life of the system. The most common cause of failure is a narrow focus on first cost," said Scher.

World Business Review may also be viewed on PBS The Business & Technology Network, United Airlines, or through the video on demand via Yahoo! Broadcast. Additionally, WBR airs on local affiliates of major television networks (ABC, CBS and FOX) throughout the United States.

WBR's continuing education series is being used in a variety of business and technology courses within the Business School libraries at Carnegie Mellon University, University of Notre Dame, Dartmouth College, University, Georgetown University, University of Florida, and the City University of Hong Kong, among other distinguished institutions of higher education.

Videotapes or continuing education systems (via Indiana State University) are available by calling 1-800-WBR-1032 or by visiting www.wbrtv.com.
